Fever is one of the most common reasons parents bring children to the doctor. In most cases, fever is a sign that the body is fighting an infection.

What counts as a fever?

A temperature of 38°C (100.4°F) or higher is a fever.

Caring for your child at home

  • Offer plenty of fluids — breast milk, water, ORS or soups.
  • Dress your child in light clothing.
  • Paracetamol can make your child more comfortable. Give the dose based on your child's weight, as advised by your doctor or the medicine label.
  • Never give aspirin to children.
  • Sponging with cold water or ice is not recommended.

When to see a doctor urgently

  • Any fever in a baby younger than 3 months
  • Difficulty breathing or fast breathing
  • A fit (seizure)
  • Unusual drowsiness, or your child is hard to wake
  • A rash that does not fade when pressed
  • Stiff neck or severe headache
  • Signs of dehydration: very little urine, dry mouth, no tears
  • Fever lasting more than 3 days

Key message

Treat the child, not the number on the thermometer. A playful child with a fever is usually less worrying than a quiet, drowsy child with a lower temperature.
